“We here at Brixton Buzz have grown rather fond of our local persistent squatters, who have proved ready and willing to take over empty/derelict buildings and then decorate them with versions of their much travelled political banner… Their latest – and most comprehensive – effort can be seen in Acre Lane, with the multi coloured banner referencing some of the issues affecting communities in the area…”

“With most of the businesses now evicted from Brixton’s railway arches, local street artists have sent out a message to Network Rail, decrying their unpopular redevelopment plans. The work by @Morganico and @MariaInPaint conveys powerful images about the impact of Network Rail’s plans, which has resulted in many much-loved businesses booted being out of their premises…”

The tight relationship between local authorities, estate agents and property developers leads to rising rents and a shortage of social housing, to the closure of libraries and social centres, the demolition of pubs and clubs. A text circulated recently by a Londoner as a critique on the Dalston ‘Vibe’ development:
Dear Middle-Class Cunts… A lot of you are genuinely non-plussed at the hostility you face when you move into a working-class neighbourhood.
‘But we bring much-needed investment, contribute to the economy, employ local labour, and diversify the community!’ – you cry as you move into your new Georgian conversion, buy-to-let another council flat for your kids, or invest in a shiny new development built on the demolished housing estate of people you’ve never met. A student arrested for waving a banner calling politicians “wankers” has been let off as prosecutors dropped a case against him on the eve of his day in court. Adam Barr, 24, who studies at the SOAS in London, was arrested by Tower Hamlets police last April for holding a banner with pictures of David Cameron, Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage and the words “All Fucking Wankers”…
